TABOR offers eight places each year. One of these places is sponsored by the Society of Bookbinders and reserved for a book artist with a special interest in the craft of bookbinding. The resident on this place takes part in the programme in exactly the same way as the other artists, and must meet the same application criteria plus a professed interest in developing his or her bookbinding skills in this year.
If you qualify for this place, just tick the according box during the application process and remember to make reference to your interest and intention for this place in the other sections, when talking about your prior experience and/or your plans for the residency year.
We do not limit craft-interested candidates to this one place.
Please also look at the FAQs and the “How to apply” sections, as these all apply to a candidate for this residency.
If you still have questions or would like to talk things through, you are welcome to get in touch with us.
Who is eligible for the Society of Bookbinders sponsored residency?
Any book artist who would like to participate in TABOR and wants to dedicate the next year to exploring and developing their knowledge and skills in the areas of (craft) bookbinding (including box making) or history of bookbinding.
You can be a beginner and do not have to prove existing ability.
Eligibility Criteria:
- UK resident, 18+ years old
- have made at least 2 pieces of book art
- have either a background in craft bookbinding (including box making) and/or history of bookbinding and wants to explore book arts more
- or a book artist who wants to expand their craft skills and use the residency year to develop and research craft bookbinding, boxmaking, or historic bindings.

I can’t quite decide whether I should apply for this residency, or rather for a general place. Which increases my chances?
If you are eligible for the SoB sponsored residency, then do tick the box. It does not make you ineligible for one of the other residencies.
We’ll determine artists for our two dedicated residencies first, and then look at the others. Those who tick the bookbinder’s box and were not selected on the place, are still being considered for the other places.
So you increase your chances if you tick the box.
Is there a deadline for application?
Yes, the main application period is 1st October until 15th November. Any access arrangements have to be requested (including an extended deadline) before 15th of November.
Applications are made through CuratorSpace. You will need to create a free CuratorSpace account and submit the form there.
If filling in long forms is difficult for you, we can support you. We can complete the form with you, or we can enter basic information on your behalf and receive the main details in another format. CuratorSpace still needs a form with your name on it, because they require us to send all decisions through their messaging system

What should you do now?
If you feel ready to make an application, simply head over to curatorspace, make a free account if you don’t have one yet, and apply.
If you need more information to prepare, check out the FAQ and How to apply sections on this page. And if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.
